Saw Palmetto - Serenoa repens
This monotypic fan palm is found natively throughout the coastal areas of the southeastern US, and is often seen forming dense clumps among pine stands. The suckering trunk is usually subterranean or very short, occasionally reaching heights of 6 feet. Topped with short, stiff leaves ranging in color from green to blue to silver, S. repens makes an attractive palm to try in the warm temperate garden. While it often survives extreme frosts of short duration, it needs hot summers to do well. Provide a well-draining soil, especially in areas with cold winters. This palm is said to be difficult to transplant.
